Erin Rose, President Spirits Basketball Club
To our Spirits Players and Families,
I wanted to take some time to touch base with families and pass along a few updates about the club. Although the last year has not been what we hoped or could have anticipated, we are working behind the scenes to try and build something great for our players when it’s safe to return to play.
At this point in terms of gym time, we are at a major disadvantage. Throughout the year, we have been unable to rent the school spaces we always use and are left with coaches who want to coach, players who want to play, but without enough facilities to make that happen. Please know that coaches are antsy to get back to the game they love and the game your children love, too. Our executive feels the same way. We are yearning for some normalcy and for our kids to get back on the court. We are hopeful to be able to have access to more spaces and more consistently in the future.
We have currently had some major changes in regards to the executive. We have a new President and that is me, Erin Rose! I’m nervous, excited and proud to be taking on this role. It comes with much, much thought and consideration.
For those who don’t know me, allow me to introduce myself! I’m a Mom of two little boys (8 months old and 4 years old) and I’m also a high school teacher. I grew up here, played Spirits and also at Loyalist College. I have coached high school, rep and at the college level as well. My love for the game of basketball has been my passion and drive throughout my life. It has led me down amazing paths and introduced to me wonderful, loving, life-changing people. I am not taking this role lightly - which is why I chose to use the word nervous.
I care about women and girls in sport more than I can fully express. I wouldn’t be the confident, self-assured, active woman I am today without the Spirits organization. Which is why being involved in such an important role is special to me. I want that for your girls too. I want them to have a place to learn self-esteem, confidence, build friendships that last a lifetime and love the game as much as I do. I want them to make memories both on and off the court and build a healthy lifestyle that can stick with them throughout their lives. This game and this organization is so much more than just basketball.
However, I can’t do this alone. So, we are building a sound executive team to make our club even stronger in the coming years. I’m thankful to Mike Kirby and Drew Davison who are sticking around to help me along the way.
We don’t know when we will be able to get back to the practices, hotel rooms, travelling, the highs and lows of wins and loses and making memories with teammates, BUT we know that time will come and when it does, we are working hard to have things in place to continue to make Spirits an integral part of your child’s health and development.
If you have any thoughts, concerns or questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I look forward to watching your children grow as players and people in the years to come.
