Major Atom Girls go 2 and 2 at Guelph Phoenix AA tournament.

Major Atom girls travelled to Guelph and participated in the AA round robin tournament over the weekend Jan 16-18.  We wanted to enter an AA tournament to see how the girls would match up.  Overall the kids held their own against stronger competition and would have matched up with any team in the tournament aside from the team from Oakville Vytis #1 who easily won all their games.

We defeated a big Toronto Lords team  in the 1st game 23-22.  We played well defensively which was the difference, but struggled with our shooting.  Kaila Hinch with 9 points led the team.  Brigid was defensive player of the game.

In the 2nd game, that determined if we would play in the medal round, we had a disappointing loss to the Dundas Dynamo in overtime by 25-22.  The girls outplayed Dundas but again had problems finishing and we were in foul trouble most of the game.  We were assessed 18 fouls to Dundas’ 6.  Dundas went to the foul line 10 times and scored 5 points; while we only went to the foul line twice with no points.  Leading scorer was Melina with 6 points.  Defensive player of the game was Emily Harvey.

We played Toronto Lords again in the 3rd game and this time lost by 23-20; however the girls played their best game at both ends of the court and continued to play well defensively; especially against their big girls; one of which was their best player who did NOT play the first time we played them.  I didn’t have the score sheet at the time of this email.  Grace Callahan was defensive player of the game but a solid team effort by all 12 girls.

In the last game, the girls easily defeated the team from York 34-18.  Grace led with 10 points; Melina, Madi  and Syd with 6 each.  Madi Tracze was defensive player of the game.
